Manhattan Beach’s beloved Pitfire Pizza, a Metlox staple since 2013, will soon close to make way for Great White, an all-day eatery focusing on organic, farm to table ingredients.
Pitfire Pizza has reportedly struggled to keep up with rising rent costs in Downtown Manhattan. The restaurant’s commitment to providing good food at modest prices made it a beloved destination for students, families, and casual dinners.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said longtime customer Lisa Hernandez, who has been bringing her family to Pitfire for weekly dinners for nearly a decade. “There aren’t many places like this left in Manhattan Beach – where you can take your kids, enjoy great food, and not spend a fortune.”
Replacing Pitfire Pizza will be Great White, a Los Angeles based chain known for farm-to-table ingredients and a menu that combines breakfast and dinner. The new restaurant will bring an upscale touch to the space, offering a bit of everything, along with pizzas. While Great White’s menu is expected to appeal to Manhattan Beach’s health-conscious crowd, its slightly higher prices may not fill the void left by Pitfire.
“The exact timeline for Pitfire’s closure and Great White’s opening has not been confirmed,” an employee who asked to remain anonymous reported, “But this situation is a reminder of the financial pressures facing restaurants in prime locations like the South Bay.”
For now, fans of Pitfire Pizza can make the most of their final visits to the Manhattan Beach location. The restaurant will continue to operate at its other locations in Carlsbad, Costa Mesa, Echo Park, Mar Vista, North Hollywood, Pasadena, and more.
