Mira Costa girls varsity soccer team is making it clear they are a winning team. Costa hasn’t lost a game so far this season.

The Mustangs beat El Segundo 3-0, tied 1-1 with Downey, and won 3-1 over Santa Monica. Their match on Wednesday continued their streak, as the Mustangs beat Culver City 2-0.

“We had only played a few games together as a team so far and we hadn’t played Culver yet, making this a nerve wracking game,” sophomore forward Hayley Kase said. “But even though it was one of our earlier games of the season our few wins so far gave us confidence going into the game.”

In the second half, freshman midfielder Koyuki LaRoque sealed the deal. LaRoque had the  ball at the top of the penalty area and kicked an amazing shot into the top corner of the goal, past the goalie. Her goal gave the Mustangs a comfortable lead, securing their win over Culver City.

“Koyuki scoring was my favorite moment of the game,” Kase said. “Because she was a freshman her goal really brought the team together making us stronger as a whole.”

The Mustangs will face Clovis and Capo tomorrow, in the Best in the West Tournament at Newport Harbor High School. According to junior midfielder/forward Kate Grzesek, the team is unsure how they will perform in the tournament.

“These games we’ve had starts off our season strong,” Kase said. “Hopefully we can carry the momentum into the rest of the season and have the same success.”
