Costa Signs of Suicide (SOS) event

On Thursday, December 5, during office hours, Mira Costa gave a Signs of Suicide (SOS) Presentation to all tenth graders. This is a district wide presentation that aims to spread awareness about mental health and seeking help if needed.

To start off the presentation, homeroom teachers gave a brief introduction about what was to be discussed. Then, students were shown a video which focused on the personal stories of certain people, with a purpose of teaching students that it is ok to ask for help, and it is possible to overcome struggles. The event ended off with students anonymously filling out two forms answering questions about their own mental health.

Zoe Mellinger, a sophomore at Mira Costa said, “This event was very simple and quick, yet informative. Watching this video and hearing people talk is important because it gives students all around campus a better understanding and awareness of other people’s stories.”

The importance of holding an event like this is immense, especially in a school setting, because students are able to learn about this topic even if it doesn’t apply to themselves. Students will now have a better understanding of what people around them could be going through and how to help them.

Sophomore Layla Mazry said, “It was really nice to get informed about issues like this and it’s good to know what to do when situations like this come into your life with your friends.”
