The Mustangs bounced back from their loss last Friday against Redondo, defeating Da Vinci 58-40 in a blowout win on Tuesday. Costa was led by senior guard Jacob De Armas and improved to 20-2 and 4-1 in Bay League.
The Mustangs previously defeated the Wolves early in the season with a score of 61-49. Costa had a slow start to the rematch, struggling to pull ahead in the first half, with a lack of energy and urgency from the team.
“We struggled to get going at the beginning of the game and it affected us,” De Armas said. “We started with no energy but it began to build leading into the second half”.
Junior forward Jayden Kainsinger agreed with De Armas. According to Kainsinger, the close score in the first half was due to poor execution on both sides of the ball. The Mustangs were able to pull ahead once they began to get into a rhythm and step up in big moments.
“Our energy and execution wasn’t as good as it normally was early in the game,” Kainsinger said. “A big part of the momentum shift was due to the production from junior guard Sheamus McGerr off the bench. He always stays ready and it shows.”
The Mustangs are currently sitting second in the Bay League only behind rival Redondo. The Mustangs will clash with Palos Verdes Sea Kings in a Bay League outing tonight, where they hope to improve their rank of 16th in the state. The Sea Kings will travel to Costa for the rematch at 7 PM. Costa hopes to improve their record and defeat PV for a second time this year.
