Boys soccer continues their success this season, with a 14-game win streak. The Mustangs are in the middle of their Bay League games and are still undefeated.
On Jan. 17, the Mustangs took on Redondo in a big rivalry matchup. However, Costa was able to shut the Seahawks out in a 3-0 victory. An impressive showing from junior goalie Cole Kubitz with four saves helped the Mustangs seal the win. According to senior and defenseman Randy Hess, it was important for them to control the game at all times.
“We really focused on controlling the midfield leading up to the game,” Hess said. “It completely shut them down. So midfielders Ben Heins and Derek Salguero played perfectly in the defense midfield role.”
Following their rivalry win, the Mustangs took on South on Tuesday in another Bay League matchup. Costa played South a week prior and came out on top. Similarly, the Mustangs shut them out 2-0 and moved to 4-0 in Bay League play. According to Hess, having played them just a week before helped their game plan.
“After playing them a week earlier we figured out how one dimensional their strategy was,” Hess said. “So planning around that found us success with our size advantage and overall technical ability.”
With these two big wins, they improved to 18-1 on the season. Costa takes on Bay League rivals Palos Verdes at home tonight at 6:30 PM for Senior Night. According to Hess, it is important to work together as a team for the rest of the season.
“Just playing as a unit more than anything is what is going to create success for us,” Hess said. “We win games when we can commit and play for each other. When you put in the work for the guy standing next to you then you can beat any team.”
