The Mira Costa track team hit the road on March 3 to compete against nonleague Warren High School. Both the boys and girls divisions headed home with wins to start the season.

Junior Adam Perez was the winner of the boys mile with a time of 4:44 and two-mile race with a time 10:23. Senior Aryn Foland finished second in the girls mile race and first in the two-mile race.

Junior Kelli Sugimoto came in second in the 800 meter, finishing with a time of 2:30.

“While I don’t usually run the 800, it was really fun to try a new event. I’m proud of my finish,” Sugimoto said.

The Mustangs are looking forward to their next meet away on March 12 against Culver City High School.

Senior Brett Douville won the 800 meter while junior Charlotte Barnett captured the 400 meter in the girls race against Warren.

“It was a great feeling to win my first race of the year,” Barnett said. “Although we won, we have a lot of work to do to get to CIF.”

The boys team won in the 4×4 while the girls fell short in the same race.

In the pole vaulting division, the boys led all field events with a perfect 9/9 score. The girls finished second with a score of 8/9.

“To have a perfect pole vaulting score in the first meet is a great way to start the year,” junior pole vaulter Tyler Hext said.

With the season underway, coach Bob Fish has high expectations for his team.

“It’s always nice to achieve victories with both the boys and girls,” Fish said. “However, we have a lot to improve upon, including most field events.”
