The Mira Costa girls soccer team was on the brink of pulling off another upset on Feb. 22 against Long Beach Wilson. However, an overtime goal by Wilson senior Renee Mendiola ended Costa’s hopes of advancing into the CIF semifinals. The final score was 2-1.
Costa’s lone goal was scored in the first half on a cross from freshman Mandy McKeegan to sophomore Alyssa Lloja Covarrubio, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
“I was really happy when I was able to score that goal,” Lloja Covarrubio said. “I think we had a great season.”
Wilson was able to find a hole in the Mustang defense with two minutes to go in the game and forced overtime.
In overtime, Mira Costa was unable to get a shot on goal. With two minutes to go in extra time, Mendiola was able to get a shot and it resulted in a last-second goal for Wilson.
“It’s a tough way to end the season, but I’m happy with how my girls played in this game and the whole year,” coach Patty Perkinson.
