Coming off its first Bay League title since 2007, the Mira Costa girls water polo team lost in the first round of CIF play. The team set high hopes for the first CIF game on Feb. 17. Costa was left disappointed, losing to Edison with a score of 13-6, ending with a season record of 12-7.
“We definitely could have done better defensively, but we did have high points with goals,” senior goalie Emma Fiore said.
A shining moment in the game was during the first period, when senior Marisa Purcell claimed the game’s first offensive attack with a successful swing shot into Edison’s goal, evening the score 1-1. Edison then made a succession of shots against Costa’s defense, giving it a lead that it would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
Purcell made one more goal before the second half, taking the score to 8-2.
Although sophomore Emily Milstead and junior Sara Booth each made goals, Costa lost the game.
Coach Jon Reichardt looks to next season.
“We’ll be losing seniors but we have great underclassmen,” Reichardt said.
