The Mira Costa boys soccer team could not match the skill of Robert A. Millikan Senior High School, losing 3-1 at home on Feb. 18 and ending its season with a record of 13-3-6 overall.
“I was happy with the performance but disappointed with the result,” coach Gary Smith said.
The Mustangs were down 1-0 at halftime and, despite several attempted offensive attacks by seniors Alex De La Espriella and D.J. Pepper, they were unable to come back.
“In this game, we did not have the quick, careful touches that we generally have,” Smith said.
Senior Joe Valenzuela scored the only goal for the Mustangs with an assist from senior Charlie Pitts. The goal tied the game.
“They scored two more goals in the second half, and we couldn’t match them,” Smith said.
