At home on Feb. 19, Costa’s girls basketball team was defeated by Brea Olinda in the second round of CIF. The game ended with a score of 67-53.
The Mustangs brought the score within five points many times. However, Costa was never able to overpower the Wildcats.
“More than anything, we needed to mentally prepare ourselves to convince ourselves that we could compete against them,” senior Joelle Herron said.
Seniors Kylie Nakamine and Herron were Costa’s leading scorers with 19 and 14 points, respectively. Freshman Camille Mills had six offensive rebounds.
“It’s great having worked so hard and had such a successful season,” Nakamine said.
With much depth in the team and only four seniors leaving, Costa hopes to continue improving. However, the Mustangs expect difficulty in accounting for the loss of Nakamine.
“It’s going to be hard to replace Kylie,” coach Craig Takahashi said. “Hopefully the underclassmen will learn from her.”
Costa finished 19-10 overall and 8-2 in Bay League play. Despite the loss, the Mustangs look forward to next season.
“In the coming years, I hope we win Bay League and make a deeper run in CIF,” Mills said.
