Mira Costa prepared for a memorable Saturday when more than 10 teams arrived at Bill Cooper Field on March 26 for one of Costa’s biggest track events of the year, the Mustang Relays.
The boys and girls will have some time off before taking on Peninsula High School on April 12 on the road.
“We had some outstanding marks in this meet today,” coach Bob Fish said. “It was a successful in all events. The feedback that we got from other schools was great too.”
The Costa girls distance medley team finished first with a time of 12:33:38, while the boys found themselves just short in second place at a time of 10:51:29.
The girls also took home first place trophies in the 4×100, 4×1,600, and the 4×400 relays.
At 4:04:5, the girls 4×400 winning relay time was one-tenth of a second away from the Mira Costa school record.
“We are very proud of ourselves as a team, and finishing this close to a school record makes us want to work even harder,” junior Charlotte Barnett said. “If we work ahead we will be plenty ready when our Arcadia meet comes around.”
Senior runner Brett Douville finished second in the boys 1,600- meter race at 4:28:8, and junior Adam Perez finished fourth in the same event.
Additionally, junior Acacia Moore came in second for the girls 100-meter hurdles race with a time of 16:48, and Costa junior Ashlee Dotson anchored Costa’s girls 4×100 relay team, which finished in first place at 50:22.
In the boys shotput event, Costa senior JR Tavai threw the shotput 52 feet, one inch, but was unable to match Millikan High School senior Kody Robinson’s 54 feet, eight-inch throw.
Senior Ryan Morrow finished second for Costa in the boys pole vaulting event.
“This invitational brought great competition from all around the Bay League and beyond,” junior pole vaulter Tyler Hext said. “This really showed us the skills we need to work on and what we will focus on. For us pole vaulters we are very pleased with this solid meet.”
Fish was reassured by this meet that pole vaulting is the closest to perfect of all of Costa’s events.
“We need some work in all our field events with the exception of pole vaulting,” Fish said.
