“Since the store has been a part of the community of El Segundo for six decades, some of the customers who came to Slipt Stitch Yarn Shop in the 1950s still continue to come,” Leon said.

On Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays the Slipt Stitch Yarn Shop offers classes for two hours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The classes cost $10 per hour and instructive help on knitting with different materials is given by the teacher Victoria Fontana.

“Slipt Stitch Yarn Shop has always offered classes, but we now have the addition of a new policy,” Fontana said. “The store now has individual help sessions in the regular classes.”

In the Slipt Stitch Yarn Shop there are displays of knitted items such as sweaters, dresses, scarves and socks made by Leon and customers. The walls are filled with alpaca, wool, acrylic, cotton, nylon and llama yarn balls.

“Everyone who takes classes here is willing to help and share information about knitting patterns,” customer Glen Storey said. “Often there is a group of people conversing and helping each other to knit with different materials.”

Aside from offering classes, Slipt Stitch also offers yarn to schools such as El Segundo High School for school projects.

“We also donate yarn to organizations that give hats and scarves to battered women and children,”Magno said. “We send knitted goods to women and children in Iraq.”

Many Costa students knit regularly for a hobby. They often knit scarves as gifts for friends and family.

“When I went to Slipt Stitch Yarn Shop, the teacher taught me a lot of new patterns,” Costa sophomore Kari Gordon said. “Knitting allows me to express how I feel through my fashion.”
