Letters of Love Club brings joy to sick children

Mira Costa’s Letters of Love Club delivers more than flowers and balloons to patients at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.

Junior Emily Rogers created the club during her sophomore year, which makes homemade cards with encouraging words and then sends them to the hospital at the end of each semester.

“We make cards every meeting, and talk about possibilities for future fundraisers,” Rogers said.

The club meets every Tuesday in Mrs. Shapiro’s classroom, room 48. This year, junior Matt Thornton joined Rogers as co-president.

“This year we have around 20 people in our club,” Thornton said. “We focus on making sure our cards have higher quality, rather than quantity.”

By the end of 2012, the club plans to donate the money it has raised for the past two years to help the hospital deliver new treatments and train the next generation of pediatricians.

“As a nonprofit hospital, it takes the generous spirit of thousands of people to ensure that our patients receive the care that they need,” said Wendi Kellaris, director of volunteer services.

On April 23, Letters of Love plans to have a booth at the pier selling baked goods and lemonade. They hope to hold more fundraisers throughout the summer as well.

“I like knowing that the patients there will have something, no matter how small, to help brighten their days,” club member Camila Marmol said.
