Boys volleyball suffers first loss of the season

In the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on April 15 and 16, the Mira Costa boys volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season. After defeating Buena and Valencia, the Mustangs fell short against Newport but went on to beat Bellarmine Prep.

Costa swept Buena in the first round with comfortable scores of 25-22, 25-10, and 25-18. The Mustangs then pulled off a four-game win against Valencia with a score of 27-29 for a loss in the first, but finishing the set with victories of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-17.

The Mustangs fell behind early against Newport when they were defeated 25-19. Costa and Newport shared wins in the following games as Costa won the second 25-18, Newport won the third 25-17, and Costa won the fourth 25-22. Finally, Newport pulled through in the end and won 15-11.

Costa finished third in the Tournament of Champions after defeating Bellarmine Prep. The Mustangs swept them with scores of 25-15, 25-19, and 25-20. Santa Margarita won the tournament, defeating Newport Harbor in the finals.

Costa’s record is 19-1 overall and an undefeated 3-0 in the Bay League. The Mustangs face Palos Verdes High School in a Bay League game at home on April 19.
