Of Montreal: still weird after all these years

Indie pop punk group Of Montreal was formed in Athens, Georgia in 1996. Since its conception, Of Montreal has released ten studio albums along with a slew of completions and extended plays. Its newest EP, “Thecontrollersphere,” follows the band’s trend of chaotic and erratic rhythms but moves on to tread in new waters of sound.

“Thecontrollersphere” strays away from some of the more melodic and chorus-reliant styles that granted Of Montreal its commercial success. This new EP does not resemble previous works such as “Hissing Fauna, are you the destroyer?” which spawned radio hits such as “Gronlandic Edit.” Instead, “Thecontrollersphere” embarks on a more psychedelic journey.

Of Montreal’s newest release takes the band in a direction similar to that of the Beatles on “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” “Thecontrollersphere” uses an abstract array of choppy and convoluted drum beats in combination with slippery textured instrumental rifts to simulate a colorful journey through the mind. This direction may confuse listeners at first but its complexity commands attention.

The highlight of the five song EP is the third track, “Black Lion Massacre.” This song entirely embodies the musical voyage that Of Montreal takes the listener on. The distorted back beats and rhythms give the song an incredibly mysterious feel.

While this new album is a bold and well crafted piece, it may not be for everyone. Light fans of the band may be put off by the different sound. However, old funk and noise fans will thoroughly enjoy this release.

“Thecontrollersphere” is available on CD vinyl and for digital download.
