Since the year that the Palos Verdes Sea Kings joined the Bay League, the varsity Mira Costa girls swim team had not won the Bay League Championship. That streak ended when the Mira Costa boys and girls swim teams traveled to Redondo to compete in the 2011 Bay League Finals on May 6. The girls team took home first place at the meet, and the boys team finished third after Peninsula’s first-place victory.
Senior Marisa Purcell swam a 53.57 in the girls 100-meter freestyle, taking off three seconds from her previous personal best time. Along with that, Purcell took home a first-place finish for the girls 100-meter backstroke with another personal best of 59.43. Both times qualified her for CIF competition.
Also, the girls 4×100-meter freestyle relay broke a 1981 school record with a time of 3:40.77 with junior Natalie Lavinsky, sophomores Akemi Aiello and Meriel Mitsakos and Purcell.
Senior Erik Yan, upon breaking a school record of 30-years earlier this year, broke the time again with a 52.17 time in the boys 100-meter butterfly.
The swimmers will start CIF competition at the CIF prelims on May 13.
