Mira Costa honors students at All Awards assembly

The annual All Awards ceremony was held on May 26 during second period. Student of the Year was awarded to senior Leo Shaw.

Student of the Year is one of the most recognized awards at the award assembly. Six seniors – Maura Chen, Neil Duprey, Shannon Hagedorn, Erik Kreager, Allie Rosen and Leo Shaw – were nominated for this award. The Ed council voted from these six candidates to decide, and Shaw was selected.

Over 100 students were recognized at this event. The recognitions varied from valedictorians and salutatorians to book awards and department awards.

“It is a natural disposition of schools to glorify success on the field, court, sand and deck, but honoring our scholars is an most important duty of our school as well,” Principal Ben Dale said. “We hold our scholars to the highest esteem.”

Book Awards were awarded to 11 juniors. These awards recognize students for academic excellence in various areas, and they are also tied to highly esteemed universities from all over the country.

“The book awards nominations are divided among the different departments depending on the requirements given by the universities. The departments of math, science, English, art, foreign language and ASB all honor students,” College and Career Center counselor Gail Curry said.

The last category of awards at the award assembly is department awards, where all of Costa’s programs award their highest performing students.

“I like the awards ceremony because it recognizes all of our best students who have performed extraordinarily in every department,” Mancilla said.
