With sports being such a large part of the daily life at Mira Costa, there is an overwhelming importance to honor the athletes who contribute to the success of the athletic program.
“J.R. and Marisa are both outstanding athletes, and they’re both really active in their sports,” Athletic Director Paula Spence said. “They’re recognized by the public and exemplify strong athletic abilities.”
During his three-year career with Costa’s football team, Tavai tackled many different positions, such as running back, fullback and defensive lineman. To add to his accomplishments, Tavai won Bay League Most Valuable Player of the Year this past season as well as CIF Defensive Player of the Year two consecutive years.
“He is one of the most dynamic football players, we have had in the last five-to-10 years,” Lee said. “He encourages enthusiasm and joy in everyone.”
In addition to being a football star, Tavai demonstrated his athletic versatility by participating on the track and field team in the shot put division which further attracted the attention of college recruiters. Next fall, Tavai will be taking his talents to the University of Southern California as a fullback for the football team.
“I’m a huge J.R. fan,” defensive coordinator Ray Lee said. “He’s a terrific young man, and he was hugely valuable for us this year.”
Purcell earned the award for her achievements in both swimming and water polo along with being the swim and water polo’s team captain.
“She is an extremely good athlete and on top of it, she always works hard,” water polo coach Jon Reichardt said. “She’ll do great things, and she deserves everything she accomplishes.”
Purcell started with a love for swimming and decided to try water polo, which she adapted to immediately. Her adept conversion to water polo led her to become an essential part of the team. She was chosen as the Daily Breeze Girls Water Polo Player of the Year for the 2011 season.
“I started playing water polo for the first time during my freshman year here at Mira Costa,” Purcell said. “I was hesitant at first but I started enjoying it and made some lifelong friends.”
Purcell decided to commit to UC Berkeley, where she will continue to play water polo.
“Since I’m going to college for water polo, I will be training this summer to prepare,” Purcell said. “I’m excited that I can play the sport I fell in love with while I’m in college, and it’s all based on my sacrifices.”
