Student Government hosted Mira Costa’s 2011 prom, “La Soiree a Paris,” or “A Night in Paris,” on Saturday, June 4 at the Globe Theater in Universal Studios.
More than 1,000 students attended the event, making it one of the most popular proms Costa has ever held.
“Everyone really liked the venue at Universal Studios,” Claypoole said. “The decorations were really good, and all of the kids liked the extra activities.”
This year, seniors Laurel Anderson and DJ Stanfill were named 2011 Prom Queen and King.
“I didn’t expect to win [Prom Queen] at all,” Anderson said. “I have never felt more loved by the people at our school.”
The prom court was chosen using a different system than in prior years. Each prom attendee, not including those on the prom court, was given a green and yellow marble. People voted for the Prom King and Queen by placing their marbles in the box marked with the name of the prom court candidate that they wanted to vote for. The marbles were then weighed, counted and tallied.
“The marble voting system was a cool idea,” sophomore Alex Waller said. “However, I think it took way too long to count and weigh all of them, but I liked the concept. I think Student Government and the prom coordinators needed to organize the voting system a little differently next year.”
This year, SG also tried to find activities for the prom attendees, other than dancing. There were photo booths, caricaturists, casino games and a milkshake bar.
“I thought the new activities were very popular with students,” SG Commissioner of Elections Jill Thompson said. “They were a good change from last year.”
Every student had to walk through a metal detector at the prom entrance, causing an extended wait. According to Claypoole and several students, the theater’s security was strict throughout the duration of the dance.
Security was increased partly because some students were in possession of marijuana and ecstasy at the 2010 prom.
“Security was really tight,” Claypoole said. “I think there was too much security for a prom. Every student had to be ‘wanded’ and checked by security at the entrance to make sure they weren’t hiding any dangerous objects or illegal substances.”
The Mira Costa prom for 2012 will be held on June 9, at a yet to-be-released location. Student Government has already begun planning for this event.
“I’m really excited for next year’s prom,” Claypoole said. “I cannot wait to see how next year’s prom will turn out. We do not know what the theme or what time it will be yet, but we are all really excited to start planning a great prom.”
