In the season opener against long-time rival Loyola high school, the Mira Costa football team suffered a 28-14 loss away at Valley College on Friday, September 2.
Things looked bad for the Mustangs during the first half when Loyola managed to obtain an undisputed 21-0 lead. However, towards the end of the second quarter, Costa showed signs of hope when junior quarterback Alex Cuevas threw a short touchdown pass to junior Dylan Chen and the half ended 21-7.
“I think Cuevas handled himself really well at quarterback,” head coach Donald Morrow said.
A touchdown by Loyola in the third widened their lead to 28-7. Although their chances of winning the game became slim, senior Steve Giovati ran a touchdown in the fourth quarter, showcasing Costa’s running game and putting the score at the final 28-14. The match marked Giovati’s first 100-yard rushing game.
The Mustangs, with a record of 0-1, will face Inglewood high school with hopes of putting up their first win of the season. The game will take place home at Waller Stadium on Friday, September 9.
