New vice principal Goy Casillas accepted his position at Mira Costa High School on July 1 on an interim basis until January.

Jenny Wright, the previous vice principal, has taken a maternity leave, and it is now Casillas’ responsibility to fulfill all of her former duties. Along with having the responsibility of executing various disciplinary actions all around campus, Casillas oversees the attendance office, the English and physical education departments, fall registration, new students, permit students, Student Government and student activities.

“I would like to congratulate all of the Mira Costa staff for their acceptance because they make me feel at home,” Casillas said. “I’m happy to work here.”

Casillas plays a great role in helping Student Government ensure that all student activities run smoothly and efficiently. He assists Activities Director Lisa Claypoole in all Student Government-related matters from school assemblies to every athletic event.

“Even though it is early in the year, it is already clear that Mr. Casillas will be very involved in student life,” junior Student Government member Mackenzie Emerson said. “He already consults with Ms. Claypoole a lot and attends most sport games here.”

Just like Wright last year, Casillas took over registration responsibilities, overseeing the process and dealing with permit students. He introduced new students and also gave them tours of the campus during registration.

“Every time I see Mr. Casillas, he is looking over something or helping a student,” junior Georgann White said. “He never has a dull moment.”

Casillas is also fully immersed in the Mira Costa staff. According to Casillas, the staff members get along well with him.

His prior positions at other schools including Redondo Union High School and Hermosa Valley Middle School left him with knowledge regarding school-based management.

Along with taking on Wright’s previous duties, Casillas plans on using his previous experience in education to help develop future plans for Mira Costa.

“I really want to work on continuing to strengthen the moral and spirit of the excellent staff and student body, but until then I plan to use my expertise in anything I know to help resolve issues at Mira Costa,” Casillas said.

Casillas can be seen walking around Mira Costa’s campus, talking on his walky talky, or helping students solve their problems. At lunch and snack he can be seen talking to officer Lee or Ms. Hart, and making sure all students behave.

“From walking around campus, I have seen that students here are outstanding young people and all of the good things that are heard about Mira Costa are reinforced by the actions conducted by the teachers and students,” Casillas said.

According to Casillas, he looks foward to his future work here at Mira Costa.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working at all the schools I have been to but I am having a great time at Mira Costa,” Castillas said. “I’m really excited and I can’t wait to see what the school year will bring,” Casillas said.
