The Manhattan Beach Unified School District announced on Sept. 7 that it is replacing Dr. Steve Romines, who announced his retirement in early June, with Rick Bagley as the new assistant superintendent of MBUSD.
As the assistant superintendent, Romines’ main job was to oversee the school district’s $50 million budget as well as being the head of technology, food services and construction departments. He had been on staff with MBUSD since 2006, and before that he was working in the Santa Cruz school district.
“I really enjoyed working with Dr. Romines while he was the assistant superintendent,” MBUSD Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews said.
Recently though, Romines’ main focus was on the implementation of the newly passed Measure BB renovations. He worked to get design plans approved and helps oversee the construction. Because of his expertise, MBUSD wants to keep him on board as a part-time advisor to the BB project.
“Romines took great pride in doing what was best for students and employees,” Matthews said, “He especially did an excellent job with his all of his work on Measure BB.”
According to his peers, Romines was easy to work with and was an effective problem solver.
“I’ll miss him,” said Mira Costa Principal Ben Dale. “He would always help solve the problem that’s driving you crazy.”
Despite Romines’ retirement, Measure BB construction is scheduled to begin on time. In November the upper student parking lot will close, and the constuction of the new math and science buildings will begin.
However, the MBUSD school board is still in the process of getting bids from contractors, thus the major construction will be delayed until the school year finishes and demolition of the older buildings will ensue.
The new buildings will include renovated science labs and a new multi-purpose room, as well as equipping the school for new technology and energy efficiency.
“We are now DSA [Department of State Architects] approved,” Dale said. “Mira Costa is free to break ground any time and start BB construction.”
Starting on Sept. 26, Rick Bagley will begin his position as MBUSD assistant superintendant. He has had experience in the educational field, and was selected by Matthews and the MBUSD Board of Trustees from a group of 12 candidates.
His previous work includes heading human resources, as well as working with special education departments in other districts.
“Bagley is an excellent communicator who works well with all groups,” Matthews said.
As the 2011-12 school year begins, the district remains optimistic about the future. Along with Romines remaining a leader on Measure BB’s plans, Matthews believes that Bagley will also be a valuable contributor.
“[Bagley’s] passion for helping students to learn was evident to all of us in the district,” said Matthews. “We also believe that his passion will result in great benefits for the entire district.
