The Mira Costa track and field team traveled to West Torrance High School to face off against the West High Warriors in the South Bay Championships meet and dominated them on April 24.
The boys team defeated West, maintaining its perfect 7-0 record this season. Despite the girls impressive record of 6-1, very few members were invited to the meet, so almost the entire meet was focused on the boys team.
“The meet confirmed that our guys are the strongest team in the area, and our guys have just dominated this year,” coach Steve Singiser said.
The next meet will be the Bay League Preliminaries on May 4. It will qualify the Mustangs for Bay League Finals.
The boys 4×400 team, with seniors Michael Koger and Rico Wright, and juniors Brett Douville and Joe McMahon, broke the meet and school records, running 1,600 meters in 5:22.44. The same relay team set Costa’s school record just a few weeks ago at the meet against Arcadia.
“Breaking the school record feels great, and to be able to do it with a bunch of great guys makes it even better,” Wright said.
Koger won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.15 seconds and also set a meet record in the 300-meter hurdles, running it in 38.53 seconds.
“It was really exciting because I didn’t expect to break the 300-meter hurdle record,” Koger said.
Senior Anthony Holden won the men’s pole vault, clearing a 14’2” mark.
“It just feels good to jump in general. The competition isn’t against other people; it’s against yourself. I did what I wanted to do, and that was good enough for me,” Holden said.
Sophomore Adam Perez set a new sophomore class record in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:44.36.
“I’m pretty excited for winning the two-mile run. I didn’t expect to get it this year at all,” Perez said.
