As we enter the 2010-11 school year, we have plenty of milestones to reflect on and much to look forward to. We’ve made it through the first decade of a new century, and if the latest Apple products are any indication, the next nine should be ground-breaking.
As Mira Costa celebrates its 60th year of educating teenagers, La Vista will also be celebrating 60 years of reporting on the news of the Costa community during that time.
Mira Costa means something different for every student, but when looking out over Waller Stadium and seeing a new CIF title to add to the wall, or seeing the drawings of how Measure BB will reshape the campus, the sense of community that Mira Costa has fostered is undeniable.
We attend a school with exceptional breadth, from one of the top all-around sports programs in the nation to a music department that sends students to perform all around the world.
It is such a dynamic place because of the diverse passions and drives of its students. It speaks to the spirit of the school that each year a new and unique group of students can continue to live up to the high standards the last class has set.
The same is true of La Vista, where an entirely different group of people have come together to produce this last issue of the year, simultaneously testing their mettle and carrying on a torch of excellence forward into the future, maintaining traditions and breaking new ground.
This year that means, first and foremost, the establishment of a heightened online presence for easy, instantaneous access to the latest Mira Costa news. This has long been a goal of the staff, and we plan to expand on the progress made this year and meet the challenge of increasing student awareness of breaking events in the coming year.
As we continue to move our content into new media, we also aim to strengthen the visual presentation of the paper to fully exploit the advantages of the print medium. Hopefully graphic design will both attract the attention of new readers and satisfy those who already read our paper.
As important as these improvements are, our greatest concern is to maintain the high level of content that has garnered this paper awards and kept it alive for as long as the school has existed.
Our main goal as Editors-In-Chief this year will be to see that La Vista progresses in areas where it can improve and that it maintains the journalistic integrity and reliable quality that our readers have come to expect.
Even with this changing of the guard, La Vista will continue to provide the most relevant information for the Mira Costa community of students, parents and staff.
As we enter our 60th year of publication, we look forward to seizing the opportunities of a dynamically-changing journalism industry while staying committed to faithfully chronicling the events of weeks, months and years to come.
