“When I’m gone, you’ll know me by the friends I leave behind.” These monumental words from Blitzen Trapper’s latest album, “American Goldwing,” echo in the listener’s ear, making it clear the group has expanded its distinct sound.
“American Goldwing” displays only more of Blitzen Trapper’s already-abundant depth and eclecticism. The band’s most recent album successfully combines the folk-infused rock of heartland America with a methodical touch signature of West Coast rock.
Blitzen Trapper has cornered the market on a distinct sound that is solely theirs. This latest album only cements their development and individuality.
Lead singer Eric Earley’s lyrics have been known to focus on “wild-west” imagery and personal journeys, and he does not veer from this reputation in “American Goldwing.” Earley’s Bob Dylan-esque verses provide a pensive tone to the album’s songs, like “Astronaut” and “Taking It Easy Too Long.”
Songs like “Love the Way You Walk Away” and “American Goldwing,” the album’s title track, captivate the listener with assertive country guitar riffs. When they are added to Earley’s free-roam adventurer verses, a unique, vibrant sound is created.
Lyrics of wandering and adventure presented in “American Goldwing” paint an image of where the band has been and where they are going, symbolic of how the band has progressed over time.
In their 2010 album, “Destroyer of the Void,” Blitzen Trapper explored a more ballad-based style. Combined with the band’s growth and experimentation, “American Goldwing” is a testiment to the bands versatility and creativity. The album is available on iTunes and stores worldwide.
