Coming off a bye week with hopes of bouncing back from a loss versus Serra, the Mira Costa football team fell short and suffered a 29-13 loss against Chaminade High School at home in Waller Stadium on Friday, Sept. 30. Despite success early in the game, Chaminade overran the Mustangs, who were unable to keep pace with their opponents.
After enduring a slow, defense-heavy first quarter, the Chaminade Eagles rushed for a touchdown right before halftime. Following the touchdown, the Eagles went for the conversion and managed to rush the ball into the end zone putting the Mustangs at an 8-0 deficit going into the half.
During the middle of the third quarter, senior quarterback Chase Caprio faced a short stretch to the end zone and managed to run the ball in himself for a touchdown. Caprio tried to match Chaminade with a pass for the conversion but the throw was intercepted by the Eagles, putting the Mustangs in a two-point deficit at 8-6.
The Mustang offense then stalled in the middle of the third quarter and was forced to punt. Senior kicker Dominic Costa bolted down the field after the punt and recovered the ball when the Chaminade receiver fumbled, leaving the Mustangs less than ten yards from the end zone. Immediately after, senior running back Steve Giovati broke through the Chaminade defense and rushed for the Mustangs’ second touchdown. After the extra point, the Mustangs had a commanding 13-8 lead.
“I felt ecstatic when I got the ball after that punt,” Costa said. “The energy on the field was crazy at that point.”
Nearing the end of the third quarter, the Chaminade running back saw an opening and rushed for a touchdown, putting the Eagles on top again with a score of 15-13 at the end of the third. Chaminade managed to knock out two more unanswered scores in the fourth quarter, eventually ending the game with a final score of 29-13.
Mira Costa, with an overall record of 1-3, will travel to Newport Harbor High School for an away game on Oct. 6.
