Following a victory over West Torrance in the first game of Bay League play, the Costa football team faced Palos Verdes on Friday, Oct. 21. Despite a strong first quarter, the Mustangs fell to the Sea Kings 28-7.
Palos Verdes received first and looked as though they would easily score a touchdown. However, pressure by defensive linemen Quinn Goldman, Bret Gerten, and RJ Coleman brought up a fourth down and ten. The Sea Kings faked a field goal, but an incomplete pass turned the ball over on downs and brought up a Mustang first and ten on their own 14 yard line.
As the first quarter expired, the ball changed hands twice more, but neither team scored. Costa was forced to kick and Palos Verdes returned the kick for a touchdown to go up 7-0 to start the second quarter. Costa answered with a kick return by senior running back Brandon Edmond to the Palos Verdes 25 yard line. Edmond, after a series of plays carried the ball to the 1 yard line and senior running back Stevie Giovatti finished with a touchdown to tie the game.
For Costa, this would be the only score on the night. Before the end of the first half, Palos Verdes would score two more touchdowns to take a commanding 21-7 halftime lead.
Approaching the end of the third quarter, the score was unchanged. The Sea Kings faced a fourth down and were forced to punt. The Mustangs blocked the kick, but a fumble put the ball back in the hands of the Sea Kings. Before the game ended the Sea Kings scored another touchdown and took a 28-7 lead to end the game.
The Mustangs face Peninsula High School away on Friday Oct. 28. The Mustangs are now 2-5 overall and 1-1 in Bay League play.
