The Mira Costa girls golf team made it through its first round of CIF by placing 4th out of 18 teams on Oct. 27 in Hemet at Seven Hills Country Club.

The girls made the cut with their 4th-place finish, moving their record to 11-1 on the season.

“We qualified for the next round for the first time ever,” coach Tim Kelley said. “I’m very proud of our accomplishments this year.”

Needing to finish in the top four to qualify for the next round, the girls worked hard to achieve a score of 417.
“Our goal was to make it through the first round,” sophomore Megan Kim said. “We all did our best and pulled it out.”

Kim led the way for the Mustangs with her score of 78. Following her, juniors Kari and Raquel Gordon shot scores of 81 and 83, respectively. Sophomores Mika Pascual and Jenny Johnson added scores of 87 and 88, respectively, while freshman Taylor St. Germain shot an 88.

“For how the conditions were on the course, I feel like we all played well,” St. Germain said. “We are in the second round, and that is all that matters.”

The girls are determined to place higher in the next round, and Kelley has faith in the team to make a deep run in CIF.
“Everyone played great considering the circumstances,” Kelley said. “We’re really hoping to step up this coming week.”

Along with playing beside her teammates in the CIF, Kim will compete against the top qualifiers in the CIF Individual tournament. Last week on Oct. 19, Kim tied for first with a score of 73. On Oct. 31, Kim shot a 68, which was good for third-place in the second round of CIF individuals.

As for the team playoffs, the girls’ next CIF team divisional match took place on Nov. 3 in Solvang at Alisal Ranch golf course, but due to the time of publication results were unavailable.

“This year’s team has been one of the best I’ve coached,” Kelley said. “I’m confident the girls will continue their success.”
