The National Honors Society induction ceremony for new members of the club took place on Oct. 20 in the Costa cafeteria.

All inducted students must have had a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have had completed 15 hours of community service per semester in the past. Inductees were also to required to have positive teacher recommendations based on behavior and leadership qualities.

NHS members meet monthly to discuss social and community service projects.

“Being inducted into NHS was an incredibly great honor.,” junior Victor Vu said. “It’s nice to be part of a group of people who all have a great capacity to strive in different areas and change the world. It was nice to be recognized for all of my hard work.”

Trent Fujii, Meghan Burns, Jackson Casady, and Adam Gerard, all club officers, started the ceremony by leading the inductees into the cafeteria. Vice principal Goy Casillas and school counselor Jennifer Woodie handed out scholastic excellence certificates as students came out one by one. Superintendent Mike Mathews and Principal Ben Dale each spoke.

“[NHS students are] not making choices for life, they’re making choices for involvement, so I hope everyone is enjoying the moment,” Mathews said.

Upon receiving a scholastic excellence certificate, students signed the National Honors society book, which contains the signature of every inductee over Mira Costa history

“These students here truly embody the four pillars of knowledge to an amazing extent, and it is a huge honor to be a part of it all,” Dale said.

According to NHS administrator Nicole Wachell, National Honors Society inductees demonstrate achievement within both educational and social aspects. She feels that the accepted inductees represent the best attributes of all the students at Mira Costa.

“The inductees are chosen based from their excellence in scholarship and quality in character,” said Wachell.
