On Nov. 15, sophomore Megan Kim competed as the first ever Costa golfer in the CAL State tournament, where she finished 22 out of 54 competitors in all of California. Although Kim did not place, she shot a 78, just three shots away from placing. The tournament concludes Kim and the golf team’s 2011 season.
The girls golf team was knocked out of the CIF team regionals on Nov. 3rd, ending Costa’s season for the year. The girls’ final record is 11-2 overall and 8-0 in Bay League.
The game was on held on Nov. 3 in Solvang at Alisal golf course. Costa placed 12th out of 16 other schools but was unable to make the cut of the top 4 teams to qualify for the next round.
“Over the season we have grown as players and as a team,” sophomore Taylor St. Germain said. “Our team really bonded too, which created a successful environment for all of us.”
Overall, the girls had an admirable season, with only a few losses on their record. They had key victories against Peninsula and placed high in every tournament they competed in. Throughout the season, every player contributed to the team and saw success.
The girls kicked off their season with their first win against Redondo Union High school on Sept. 13 on Alodra golf course. The final score of 197 to 226 brought Costa to a 1-0 start.
Later that week, the girls defeated Redondo Union High School for the second time on Sept. 15, bringing their record to 2-0. Kim led the Mustangs with a score of 36 in their 191-233 win over Redondo. Following Kim were juniors Kari Gordon and Raquel Gordon, who both racked up a score of 38.
On Sept. 20, the Mustangs snagged their first win against South Torrance High school and their 198-217 win brought them to their perfect record of 3-0.
Sophomore Mika Pascual then led the Mustangs to their victory over South Torrance on Sept. 22 with a score of 39, her best so far of the season. The game took place at Chester Washington golf course and ended with the Mustangs’ 210-221 win, improving their record to 4-0.
The Mustangs were able to continue their undefeated season, beating West Torrance 198-223. Kim and Raquel Gordon contributed to the team’s victory by each scoring a 37. Sophomore Jenny Johnson followed with a score of 39, her personal best this season.
Kim led the Mustangs with a score of 34 in the girls 198-223 win over West Torrance on September 28, making a spotless record of 6-0 and Bay League record of 4-0. Pascual and Kari Gordon added a 38 and 39, respectively.
The girls improved their overall record to 8-0 with two victories against Chadwick on Oct. 4 and Oct. 8. On the 8th, Kim led the Mustangs to their 216-280 win over Chadwick by shooting a 37.
The girls continued their undefeated season with their victory against Peninsula High School at P.V.C.C. on Oct. 11. Kim led the Mustangs with a score of 34, one of her lowest scores of the season.
On Oct. 12, four teammates were selected by head coach Tim Kelley to play in the Knabe Cup tournament. The girls beat out 18 other schools to finish in the top five, placing 5th out of 23 other schools.
Costa wrapped up the league season on Oct. 13 with a final victory against Peninsula high school, resulting in an overall record of 10-1 for the season. On Oct. 19, the team competed in the Ocean and Bay league finals against the five other bay league schools and made it to CIF.
On Oct. 27 in Hemet at Seven Hills Country Club, the girls made the cut of the second round of CIF with their 4th-place finish, moving their record to 11-1 for the season. Although they were knocked out of CIF in the second round, Kelley could not be more proud of the girls’ accomplishments throughout the season.
“We did well for our first time being at that elite level,” Kelley said. “I look to improve on certain things for next year’s season.”
